There are quite a large variety of gemstones on the market in the modern world. While some of these gemstones can be obtained at relatively affordable prices, others can reach well over a million dollars when a person is looking to purchase a high-quality stone. Amongst the numerous stones that are currently obtainable on the market, there are two wide categories into which each of these stones can fall. These two categories include precious gemstones and common gemstones. The stones classified as common gemstones tend to be much more affordable than those that fall into the category of precious gemstones.
In this article, we want to focus solely on the stones that are classified as precious gemstones. There are four primary gemstones that fall within these categories, with diamonds probably being the most popular and widely used amongst them all. In addition to diamonds, the other three gemstones that are all considered to fall within the category of precious gemstones include sapphires, rubies and emeralds. Let’s discuss each of these particular gemstones in more detail.
Diamonds are the most common stone on the market today. It is the most popular stone that is fitted in engagement rings and is also becoming increasingly popular amongst those who are looking for wedding bands. Diamonds are found in quite a large number of different shapes, with the round brilliant cut being the most common amongst them all. Other common shapes include the oval cut, the cushion cut and the emerald cut. Some fancier diamond cuts can also be found on the market. A diamond forms deep within the crusts of our planet and consists of the hardest substance that occurs naturally in nature, carbon. Diamonds also come in other colors, which occurs when traces of certain minerals collect within the stone.
Sapphires are also classified as precious gemstones and are known for their distinct deep blue colors. Even though sapphires are known for their blue color, it is important to consider the fact that these stones can be found in other colors as well. When it comes to sapphires classified as precious gemstones however, only the blue, pink and yellow variants of these stones fall within this particular category. Sapphire gemstones are a type of aluminium oxide, consisting specifically of the mineral type corundum. Some sapphires only exhibit one primary color, but sapphires can also be found in “parti” variants, which means they exhibit multiple colors.
Similar to sapphires, rubies also consist of the aluminum oxide known as mineral corundum. What sets rubies aside from sapphire is their vivid red colors, which is the primary method of identifying a ruby from a sapphire. Any of these stones that consist of a color other than red is generally considered to be a sapphire. When it comes to colored gemstones, rubies fetch the highest price on the market when priced per carat weight.
Finally, the fourth primary precious gemstone is known as an emerald. These gemstones consist of a mineral called beryl. They are green in color, and the intensity of their color can vary greatly. The green color that an emerald possess is caused by trace amounts of vanadium and chromium that have collected within the crystal. Emeralds are known to be relatively included in many cases, and finding a flawless emerald is very hard and can be extremely expensive.
The two broad categories of gemstones that can be opted for includes precious and common gemstones. In this post, we have discussed the four primary gemstones that are classified within the category of precious gemstones. These include the diamond, ruby, emerald and sapphire stones. We have taken a separate look at each of these stones to present our reader with a better understanding of how these stones differentiate between one another.
